SSROC is an association of 16 councils representing a demographically and culturally diverse population of more than 1.2 million and 400,000 properties.
APC conducted regional waste audits for SSROC in 1999, 2001, 2005, 2008 and
2011, providing a comprehensive longitudinal data set for garbage, recycling and organics bins. During this period, the collection systems, bin sizes and recyclable materials accepted by councils changed considerably.
These impacts were monitored from a regional and council-by-council perspective. The 2008 and 2011 audit methodologies were based on the NSW Guidelines for Conducting Kerbside Residual Waste, Recycling and Garden Organics Audits in NSW Local Government Areas 2008.
Stratified random sample selection was used with samples proportional to housing stock represented in each local government area, including single-unit dwellings and multi-unit dwellings.
During the 2011 audit, a total of 6,869 bins were collected over 112 separate collections from 1,072 households. In total, 69.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) was sorted into 71 categories. SSROC member councils were provided with individual and regional results. Click here to view the report
